Personal and Professional Biography
Alex grew up in the great state of Rhode Island, “The biggest little state in the union.” He studied communication as an undergraduate at Rhode Island College in Providence and worked at a variety of jobs throughout college and after graduation in 1995. In his twenties, he experienced the ups and downs of professional life first hand. He gave his first brief workshop on communication in 1995. The relational complexities of work motivated him to continue studying communication at the graduate level.
In 1996, Alex enrolled in California State University Northridge’s master’s program in communication. In addition to an excellent academic experience there and his first experience teaching college (public speaking), he also began a graduate-level internship as a communication analyst for a management consulting firm, Communication Development Associates (CDA) in Los Angeles. At CDA, Alex shadowed senior consultants as they delivered both small and large seminars to clients throughout the west. He assisted and participated in massive off-site retreats as well as intimate customized in-house sessions to help solve specific issues. Alex enjoyed the benefits of working with these wise senior consultants, researchers, and authors as they met one-on-one with high-level executives from Fortune 500 companies to provide expert advice. He continued to work with CDA occasionally while pursuing his Ph.D.
Instead of pursuing full-time consulting, Alex chose to continue his graduate education and earn a Ph.D. He enrolled in the University of Colorado, Boulder’s graduate program where he studied with some of the most brilliant scholars in the field and to whom he owes a great debt.
In 1999, Alex became a Christian. His faith has deepened his care for people and emphasized the importance of relationships in his life. He builds all of his presentations and writing with real-world experiences and the best available research. His motivation to equip others, however, has been nurtured by his faith. In 2002, Alex married a brilliant, wise, and beautiful wife.
In 2002, Alex accepted a full-time tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. There, he continued learning from his fellow faculty about research, writing, and tackling the real-world communication and relationship problems people grapple with in the workplace. He started publishing original research in mainstream, peer-reviewed academic journals during his time in Little Rock. He also gave talks to various organizations that ranged from one-hour presentations to two-day workshops.
In 2007, Alex came back to the Northeast to The College at Brockport (SUNY), which is about 20 minutes from Rochester, NY. He is currently a tenured associate professor in the Communication Department and serves as the Graduate Coordinator for its Master’s Program. He continues to give presentations to organizations on leadership, communication, and workplace relationships.
When he's not working, you’ll find him spending time with his wonderful wife, wrestling with his young son, or playing the guitar. He's happiest when he's making his wife laugh.
